Home Theater AV Receivers

Functions of a Home Theater AV Receiver

The Home Theater Audio Video Receiver - or AVR - is a commonplace but complex product that is the brains and brawn at the center of most home theaters. The critical functions of an AVR include input switching, volume control, digital signal processing (in particular bass management and room correction), and power amplification.

What We Look For In A Home Theater Receiver

  • 7.1.4 or 9.1.6 channel audio processing with support for Dolby Atmos and DTS.X.
  • Reliable HDMI switching with support for HDR10. If the system will be based around a TV and not a projector, support for Dolby Vision.
  • Room correction that uniformly improves sound quality and allows flexibility in setup. We prefer Dirac Live because it enables free choice in the target curve and upper/lower correction limits.
  • Sufficient power for typical home theaters. At least seven channels of internal power amplification delivering 80 Watts per channel for all channels driven.
  • Bug-free operation.

WE HAVE

  • Extensive knowledge of what home theater AVRs are available on the market.
  • Knowledge of the measured performance and operational / installation quirks of the AVRs we sell.

WE KNOW

  • What power specifications you need from your AVR to drive a given speaker to a specified sound pressure level in your home theater
  • How to determine the electrical power consumption of the AVR used in your home theater, and from that the electrical circuit requirements
  • How to calibrate our pre-pros to industry standards (and beyond)

Our Home Theater AVR Recommendations

NAD T778

NAD's top AVR. 9 channels of 85W/ch all channels driven power amplification with 11 channel (7.1.4) processing, Dirac Live, and integrated Bluesound music streaming capability. Dolby Atmos but no DTS.X.

The sound quality is good, but it's not quite up to the level of the JBL Synthesis SDR-38, and it doesn’t support 16 channel home theaters. It's a solid choice and our mid-price recommendation.

JBL SYNTHESIS SDR-38

The SDR-38 is the first AVR with a JBL Synthesis badge and supports 16 channel / 9.1.6 home theaters.

This rack-mountable AVR offers seven channels of 180W/ch all channels driven power amplification with support for 4-ohm speakers. Room correction is Dirac Live, and Dolby Atmos / DTS.X are supported.

Sound quality is exceptional thanks to the internal sweet-sounding Class G amplification. It's our go-to AVR and highly recommended.

What Do Our Clients Think?

“Acoustic Frontiers were very patient and helpful when it came to selecting speakers and equipment for the room. As a vendor for a multitude of companies, I really felt that I was getting objective advice. They helped me select everything from the speakers, AVR, to even the projector and screen! The end result was nothing short of amazing and my family and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Acoustic Frontiers receives my highest recommendation. We can’t thank you all enough!”

Case Study

“One of Acoustic Frontiers’ strengths was their willingness to work flexibly with us from both a budget and design perspective. Although they are of course well prepared to make equipment suggestions, they are also willing to work with whatever equipment is already in place to create the best system possible. We ended up with a mix of gear, but it all works together seamlessly. Post-installation and calibration, the system looks and sounds phenomenal!”

Dr. Rosenbaum.

Case Study

“Acoustic Frontiers started out with a design review (since the room work had already begun) and after a couple of interactions I was comfortable enough to let them plan/guide the rest of the build, and purchase the AV equipment from them. They took the time to understand our requirements, discuss equipment options and budget considerations, and were able to provide recommendations without any over-selling. The room has turned out beyond our expectations, and it would not have been possible without Acoustic Frontiers’ home theater products & services.”
