Bass traps are acoustic absorbers designed specifically to be effective down into the frequency range where room modes cause problems. Typical 3" thick absorber panels start to lose effectiveness at around 250Hz whereas most of our modal resonance problems occur below 150Hz .

Acoustic Frontiers recommends using specially design bass traps from Primacoustic, RPG and RealTraps to extend absorption down to 80Hz or so. These traps include a number of mechanisms to increase absorption: increased  thickness of fiberglass used (up to 6"); addition of a a membrane to convert pressure to velocity and use of an airspace between the bass absorber and the boundary to which it is mounted. Below 80Hz use RPG's Modex range of tuned membrane absorbers - the Modex Plate, Module and Corner.

Bass traps are best located in the corners of the room since all room modes have a pressure high or node in the corner. They can also be installed in tri-corners, where two walls meet the ceiling or floor, or on the walls. For more details see our article 'The Secrets of Bass Trap Placement'.
